My stay here was good. Check in was smooth (there is no front desk, you go to the bar in Casa del Popolo to get the key when you arrive), staff were friendly.
You are very much left to your own devices here, there were no dedicated hotel staff on-hand, no housekeeping throughout my three-night stay, though there were plenty of numbers to call if I needed anything and everything was clean. There were extra towels and things in the shared bathroom, and all guests have access to a kitchen stocked with the essentials.
As an added bonus, my stay included a coupon to save on food (sadly no discount on booze) at Casa del Popolo, and entry for two to all concerts at the bar during my stay. Make sure to take advantage of that, as this venue is an important one in the Montreal scene and the music is very well curated. As a bonus, the proprietors put a lot back into the Montreal arts scene, including running the great music festival Suoni Per Il Popolo, so your money will be in good hands.
In conclusion, if you want to be pampered stay elsewhere and be prepared to pay through the nose. If you want to stay somewhere pleasant and unfussuy in a very hip neighbourhood then this is as good as it gets.
