Great bargain in a great location. Eclectic hotel. Restaurants galore and nightlife right outside the door. I stayed to see Alanna Sterling in concert at Urbanista, a bar three blocks away. Whenever they return to this area of Montreal for another show, I will definitely stay at Pensione Popolo.

A quiet stay in a barebones room. There were no tissues, the lights and clock were unplugged, the carpet was quite stained, and the bed's fitted sheet was so small it popped off nightly. Someone came through and cleaned the trash in the common area which was nice considering it was the only place to eat.

Perfect part of town, Everything is right around, Got all the info/ code ahead of time. This place as a great vibe not like another chain hotel. We need more hotel like Pensione Popolo. + the owner is super friendly.

The stairs were a pain but the room was clean and smelled great. The ac was a perfect touch and the owner is nice! Around a 15 min walk from the metro station though!

Used BandAid in my sheets. Flat flat flat pillows. Dirty face-cloth. Slow sink. Stuck shower door. Two tight flights of stairs to reach room. I thought the place was quite clean (simply in need of renovating) until i fpund someone's old bandaid in my sheeys ... Yuck!! And smell of boiled cabbage all night. I left as soon as i could in the morning.

Let's start with check-in. There's cafe/pub immediately left puff the door to the pension. That is where you check-in. I was unaware and ringing the door bell for 10 minutes. Then you must traverse 2 flights of stairs. The room I had was not ensuite but the toilet and shower are right outside the rooms only a few steps so no big deal. Room was clean. AC worked well. Wi-Fi was good. Overall I had no issues other than check-in. Now that I'm aware of how that works, I'd stay again if I make it back to Montreal.

Loved the charm of the old building. Great location; near parks, shopping, public transportation, and restaurants. Cleaning staff, however, could be more attentive and thorough: did not vacuum under bed or behind furnishings and did not collect trash or replenish towels.

Not good to my taste
I had to cancel my reservation as soon as I saw the stairs and room. Bathroom was very small and the sink was elsewhere. It can be a good stay for students but not for tourists!

Thanks for your comments. It is true that we are located in a classic Montreal building with stairs. Two of the rooms share a bathroom with a separate toilet room. The other two have private bathrooms of their own and the apartment we rent is fully furnished and obviously has its own bathroom. I would recommend if you would like a private bathroom to rent either room 2 or 3 or the apartment. Thanks!

Great price for the area.
Great area. Clean room. Just be advised you need to go into the bar to get an envelope with your room code. I wasn't told that ahead of time. There's not a lobby or anything and if you ring the bell you may not get an answer. Now that I know all this I'd stay there again because the price and area are great and if you are going to be on the town all night as I was and just need a room it works.

HI Tony. Not sure what you mean. The stairs are not falling apart at all. Recently painted. The washroom is shared with only one other room. The other rooms have private baths.

Fun Hotel in Cool Neighbourhood
My stay here was good. Check in was smooth (there is no front desk, you go to the bar in Casa del Popolo to get the key when you arrive), staff were friendly. You are very much left to your own devices here, there were no dedicated hotel staff on-hand, no housekeeping throughout my three-night stay, though there were plenty of numbers to call if I needed anything and everything was clean. There were extra towels and things in the shared bathroom, and all guests have access to a kitchen stocked with the essentials. As an added bonus, my stay included a coupon to save on food (sadly no discount on booze) at Casa del Popolo, and entry for two to all concerts at the bar during my stay. Make sure to take advantage of that, as this venue is an important one in the Montreal scene and the music is very well curated. As a bonus, the proprietors put a lot back into the Montreal arts scene, including running the great music festival Suoni Per Il Popolo, so your money will be in good hands. In conclusion, if you want to be pampered stay elsewhere and be prepared to pay through the nose. If you want to stay somewhere pleasant and unfussuy in a very hip neighbourhood then this is as good as it gets.

It's an apartment with three bedrooms and one kitchen and dinning area on 3rd floor. Don't take a big and heavy luggage with you as there is no elevator and the steps are narrow and steep. Condition is old and only one air conditioner to cool down the three bedrooms and lobby as well as the kitchen. The kitchen is good enough to cook for a family.

Absolutely great if you know Montreal and Casa
I've lived in Montreal and gone to countless shows at Casa et al so I knew roughly what I was getting –– a modest room above a legendary music club in a terrific neighbourhood. If you don't know Montreal and Casa de Popolo etc you may or may not like this. It's not a typical Holiday Inn. But we were very happy. The location is great, the room was clean, shared bathroom and shower were good, appreciated the old Suoni and Casa posters and the good selection of magazines in the common area. Great stay, would come again.
