Dear Rebecca, Thank you for the strong rating. Our machiya is more expensive than nearby hotels because our guestrooms are more than twice as large as their guestrooms. While a quick review of the map shows virtually no hotels located in our Gion location that borders Kyoto's world renown Hanamikoji Geisha Teahouse district. Thank you for clarifying. The second bedroom is a traditional Japanese self enclosing tatami room that can be enjoyed as a traditional Japanese living space during the day and then at night one can remove the light portable ( see photos on Expedia) table and chairs for sleeping at night.

Thank you for noticing the workmanship and details of our traditional Machiya. The renovation/restoration was done by Miyadaiku craftsman who are shrine and temple woodwork specialists.

Dear Guest, Sorry to hear your disappointment. Clearly rainy season negated some of what Machiya Maya offers with its balcony/temple garden views and despite air con throughout can cause high humidity. Apologies and thank you for letting us know about your poor sleep. Our futons are Japan standard. However we listened to your feedback and ordered the highest quality Nishikawa futons that combined with our very comfortable Queen size western beds ensures our guests will have a good night sleep. Machiya Maya Gion is a traditional machiya renovation/restoration. So the entryways into rooms are a lowish 1.85m or 6.1 feet. However to change this would destroy their Japanese design and character. So we raised the ceilings throughout to over 3.5 metre (11 feet) in all the rooms and hallways. While the tatami living room is a Japan standard 6 tatamis so 10 sqm so is plenty of relaxation space for this 3 person maximum suite although on rainy days larger would be preferable.
