Visit a tropical Coral Island with magnificent beaches, a kaleidoscope of marine life, myriad watersports and breathtaking viewpoints.

Set in the heart of the glistening waters of the Bay of Bangkok is Koh Lan. It’s where you can enjoy white-sand beaches, try watersports and discover a fascinating underwater wonderland. Koh Lan’s spectacular natural beauty ranges from undulating green hills to rocky coves and pristine coral reefs. The island is around 4.7 miles (7.5 kilometres) from Pattaya, on Thailand’s mainland, and is a popular daytrip destination.

On this picturesque island, the village of Naban Port is a centre of activity. Wander the zigzagging streets to see how the island’s residents live and browse handicraft stalls. Go to Na Baan PierOpens in a new window to watch tourists, fishermen and traders come and go from the mainland. Enjoy uninterrupted views across the blue water to Pattaya’s coastline.

Koh Lan is less than 3 miles (5 kilometres) long and about 1.2 miles (2 kilometres) wide, with a coastline peppered with attractive beaches. Almost all present fine white sand, enticing water and watersports, including jet-skiing, parasailing and snorkeling. On the eastern shore, find serene beaches such as Ta-Yai BeachOpens in a new window. Go to laid-back Nual BeachOpens in a new window, which is famous for picturesque sunrises and its impish troops of monkeys.

The western shore is where you’ll find more animated beach resorts. Tawaen Beach is the liveliest, with a waterfront promenade packed with bars, restaurants and souvenir shops. Samae BeachOpens in a new window is great for watersports, sunsets and walks to hilltop lookouts such as Khaoo Na Yok. Hike along a narrow hillside path to secluded Tonglang Beach, where you can join a glass-bottom boat excursion.

Be sure to visit superb snorkeling sites and the chance to spot a multitude of colourful aquatic creatures. Guided tours depart from Naban Port to the nearby islands of Koh Khrok and Koh Sak.

Reach Koh Lan by catching a ferry or speedboat from Pattaya and then get around using motorcycle taxis and baht buses (shared taxis). Alternatively, explore the island at your own pace on a rented scooter. Ideal for daytrips, Koh Lan also has a range of hotels and guesthouses for those that want to stay overnight on this island paradise.

The beaches are beautifull but spoilt with plastic bottles and rubbish. They need to adopt a policy on this island of a plastic clean up as they do in Koh Chang where volunteers help every week.
