About Ko Lanta

An island in southern Thailand around a one-hour boat ride from mainland Krabi, where long stretches of beaches are set in front of palm trees, jungle, mountains and rubber trees, Ko Lanta is a paradise island. The island has been inhabited for some 500 years when nomadic sea gypsies sailed here, later followed by Muslim communities from Malaysia and Indonesia, and Chinese merchants. Today it is a thriving, multicultural island with pleasant villages and stunning beaches that are popular among couples and families.

Don’t Miss

There is much to see and do on Ko Lanta for both sea and land lovers, and it is easy to spend a couple of weeks exploring all of the beaches and nature on the island.

For the cultural character of Ko Lanta visit: Lanta Old Town with its temples, and the Sea-Gypsy Village. Those that want to get off of the beach for a day can also visit the stunning Khao Mai Kaew Caves in the centre of the island or the Orchid nursery farm.

If you love adventure and sports try these: scuba diving, snorkelling, fishing, kayaking or trekking. There are also of course the beautiful beaches; there are nine on Ko Lanta that stretch along the 30km length of the island.

Restaurants and Bars

Eating and drinking is quite pleasing on Ko Lanta thanks to its excellent Thai cuisine and good selection of international options. Much of the local food here has Malay and Indian origins, like massaman curry, chicken biriyani and khanom jeen (noodles with fish curry). Some of the best places to find cheap local cuisine are along Klong Dao Road, Klong Khong and Ba Kantiang roads, as well as in Ban Saladan. For seafood, stroll along any of the beaches and dine at a beachfront restaurant. Of course the most upmarket eateries are inside the high-end resorts. Drinking here is a relaxing experience that takes place in beachfront and poolside bars.

Shopping

The Indonesian art of batik has been passed down to the Ko Lanta community and there are some lovely handicrafts available. There is a covered shopping plaza near Saladan Pier where you will find clothing, handicrafts and other souvenirs, although the entire Ban Saladan area has plenty of shops, tailors and art galleries. There are a few unique shops along the main road in Lanta Old Town as well as in Klong Nin and Kantiang Bay.
