The property is good, but the service is probably the worst in Japan. My service experience in Japan is far superior to any country in the world. However, in this location, the staff are trained very poorly. We talked to managers and front office and no one seem to get it. Room has bugs and spiders! Unclean sheets and fungi in one pillow. After driving from Tokyo for almost 3 hours, we had to wait at the lobby for 40 minutes to check in. There is no decent restaurants nearby, very dark at night, each cottage is very far and unfriendly staff. The picture in the Hotels.com is deceptive! And no wifi or internet anywhere!!!
This hotel listing is very misleading.
Firstly, the photos was for a completely different property.
If one used the photos as a guide, one would think that he/she was booking a place with an open-bath.
This could have been simply rectified by having pictures on the room type listing.
Yet there was none.
One cannot shake the feeling that this was deliberate.
So I booked the Excellent cottage thinking I was getting the Open air outdoor bath cottage.
On top of that, I found out (at the reception) that I had to pay for using the hot spring in the cottage, heating and for pajamas.
This was completely unacceptable for three reasons:
1. One would think that at a hotel in a hot spring resort, this should not be charged for.
2. Being a hotel, should pajamas not be basic amenity?
3. Who charges for heating?!
Now, whilst I believe that these three items should be basic provisions, I accept that there may the rare occasion where a hotel would charge, but on those occasions, it should be clearly stated on the listing.
This hotel operates a number of other properties in the area. We stayed in one of their cottages about 3-4km away from the main hotel. While the hotel makes every effort to pick you up whenever required, we would still agree with previous reviews that having your own car is advisable, especially as there is a lot of sightseeing to be done in the area as well. Also one needs to buy food if making your own meals and that requires a trip into town. Without a car we recommend staying in the main part of the hotel, which also runs a shuttle into the station.
The cottage itself offers privacy and was pleasant and well equipped. One of the beds was quite uncomfortable & we suggest that both mattresses may need updating.
