City Palace

City Palace which includes chateau or palace, heritage architecture and heritage elements
Learn about India's longest dynasty in this palace complex, which features pretty hanging gardens, interesting exhibits and lavish temples.

Explore the sprawling City Palace complex to discover a fascinating architectural mix, see military artifacts and relax in its pleasant gardens.

Although construction began in 1559, the palace was continuously rebuilt over the next four centuries. Accordingly, its architectural designs blend a range of Mughal, Rajasthani and even European styles. Take a tour or rent an audio guide to find out about the heritage of the Sisodia dynasty, which ruled the former kingdom of Mewar and is India’s oldest dynasty. Udaipur became the capital of Mewar in the 16th century.

Enter the palace fortifications through the imposing Bara Pol (Great Gateway). Admire its medieval style before continuing to the palace's first courtyard. Beyond, Tripolia stands adjacent to eight marble Toranas, which were scales that kings used to measure their weight in gold.

The palace complex features 11 different buildings, which, though built by different rulers, complement one another well. Take some time to inspect the extravagant façades, which are adorned with arches, terraces and domes. The biggest façades stand an impressive 100 feet (30 metres) tall.

Each palace holds its own unique charms within. Venture inside the salmon-colored Manak Mahal (Ruby Palace) to see a collection of porcelain figures and wonder at the ornate interior of the Moti Mahal (Pearl Palace). Walk through reflective halls of the Sheesh Mahal (Palace of Mirrors) and then inspect the delicate peacock mosaics at Rang Bhawan. This palace also holds temples to Lord Krishna.

Be sure to stop by the gold-filled Jagdish Temple, which is widely regarded as Udaipur's most exuberant. Nearby, the shrine of Dhuni Mata is considered the complex's oldest room.

Take a moment to browse the exhibits in the palace museum including priceless artwork and displays of swords and armour. Climb to Amar Vilas to enjoy its peaceful hanging gardens, which feature fountains and romantic terraces.

Udaipur City Palace is located on the east banks of Lake Pichola and there is an admission fee. Rickshaws are an easy and affordable way to get here. The best time to visit is early in the morning, when its eastern façades catch the day's first rays.
