Home to the busiest seaport in the Philippines, not to mention the second-busiest airport in the country, Cebu city is among Southeast Asia’s top tourist destinations. It sits on the coastline of Cebu Island, and even though it’s a large metropolitan area, there is an assortment of attractions, ranging from beautiful untouched beaches through to centuries-old historical sites. It is a cluster of glitzy districts mixed with poverty-stricken neighbourhoods, and should certainly be part of any traveller’s Philippines itinerary.Don’t Miss
Most of the beaches in and near Cebu are extremely inviting. Some, like Mactan, are very popular among locals, although they don’t really have the white sand and gorgeous water that lure travellers. However, just over an hour away are beaches like Moalboal and Panglao, which are among the Philippines’ most pristine sunbathing spots. Scuba diving is recommended near Cebu too.
One of the most underestimated things to do in Cebu is venturing to the city’s lookouts. There are several places worth exploring. The top of Mt Busay is highly recommended. Gorgeous views of the city are available from here. The best way to reach the top is by mountain bike. Another great view of the skyline is from Second Mactan Bridge, especially at night.Restaurants and Bars
Food is found all over the city. Street-vendors operate everywhere, offering a large range of different dishes and snacks. SuTuKil dining is very popular. It’s an acronym for grilling, soaking or eating seafood via soups and broths, which is commonly done in the market places. Tourists will find Thai, Japanese, Korean, American, Italian, Continental and delightful fusion restaurants in Ayala Centre Cebu and IT Park. Many of these are open around the clock. No place in Cebu is better for a night out than Mango Avenue and Mango Square. The majority of the city’s nightlife venues are located here, including clubs, pubs and lounges.Shopping
Like Manila, Cebu is home to a range of shopping options, including the always-popular Western-style shopping malls. The most modern mall within the city is the Ayala Centre Cebu Terraces, which is home to a host of contemporary retailers from across the globe. Entertainment facilities are second to none also. The largest mall in the city is the SM City Cebu. It is a four-storey department store with a large number of retail outlets, plus services and entertainment options.
