Cape Byron Lighthouse

Cape Byron Lighthouse featuring a lighthouse
Enjoy magnificent ocean views, learn about shipwrecks and spot dolphins when you visit this historic lighthouse on mainland Australia’s most easterly point.

Standing on Australia’s far-eastern edge, the Cape Byron Lighthouse has been sending its bright beam over the Pacific Ocean each night since 1901. Explore the lighthouse’s awe-inspiring precinct and be treated to some of the most spectacular coastal views in Byron Bay. Spot turtles and dolphins or watch the surfers carving up the waves offshore. Check out the on-site Maritime Museum and learn seafaring stories and tales of shipwrecks.

You’ll be awed by the lighthouse’s dramatic position overlooking the cliffs of Cape Byron. Stroll around the structure and admire its outlook across the Cape Byron Marine Park. The lighthouse was constructed to help sailors navigating the East Coast and was operated by lighthouse keepers until 1989. Join a tour with a volunteer guide and learn about the role of this well-loved icon of Byron Bay in the town’s maritime heritage. Take in unbeatable 360-degree views of Byron Bay and the cape from the top of the lighthouse and see if you can spot marine creatures offshore.

Don’t miss the chance to walk out to Australia’s easternmost edge by strolling along the Cape Byron Track. This trail follows the coastline and leads to a cliff-edge viewpoint near the very tip of the headland, called the Little Wategos Track. You might spot humpback whales during their annual migration between June and November. Walk down the steps on the northern side of the cape to reach sheltered Wategos Beach.

Stop by the Cape Byron Lighthouse Café on your return to enjoy refreshments with magnificent views.

The Cape Byron Lighthouse is less than 10-minutes’ drive east of the town of Byron Bay. There is no fee to visit the lighthouse but there is a park entry fee for the Cape Byron State Conservation Area, which can be paid at the on-site parking lot. Tours run for 20 minutes and are held several times a day, except for Christmas Day. Attend a tour by making a gold coin donation. The Maritime Museum is open daily.
