The church dates from the 12th century, but was largely demolished in 1863 and rebuilt in 1864. It originally consisted of the nave and chancel, and a south aisle was added followed by a small private Chapel on the north side. The north transept is 15th C. and the roof of the north transept and nave are also 15th century. There is also a fine choir screen from the same period. The north transept was built around 1400, and originally had stained-glass windows with ancient coats of arms including those of the donors the Bataille family. This area was later used by Lords of Battles Manor as their private Chapel. The Chapel contains a Memorial to Sir William Waad of Battles Hall, who was a notable diplomat and officer of state. He was Lieutenant of the Tower of London for eight years where some of his prisoners included Guy Fawkes and Sir Walter Raleigh. The chancel was rebuilt in 1746 by Henry Woodyer. The tower was demolished in 1863 as it was unsafe. The present tower contains six bells.

"The carpet throughout was awful and dirty. Our room key did not work to keep the lights on and the shower knob was broken and we could not shower. The manager was very impatient with us when we were the paying customer that didn't have a shower and the power kept going on and off. Other guest were complaining about the slow and rude service as well. The location to the stadium and train was great but stay somewhere else! "

"I was given a room on the ground floor which was set out for a disabled person as were most of the other GF rooms. I’m sorry but this was not suitable it felt like staying in an old folks home and I had booked 3 nights. When I asked for a room change I was told the hotel was fully booked, I was not happy with this as I had paid approximately £90.00 a night to stay in a hospital room. I’m not very happy and won’t return to this hotel "
