Just a short ferry ride from Singapore, the largest island in the Riau Archipelago is a tropical paradise filled with white-sandy beaches and lush rainforests.

Bintan Island is the largest in the Riau Archipelago, a cluster of nearly 3,000 islands just off the coast of Singapore. Visit this scenic island to enjoy the tropical weather, sandy beaches, fascinating marketplaces and delicious local cuisine.

Begin your visit in Tanjung Pinang, the capital of the Riau Islands. This bustling city is a hub of Malay music and dance. The market here is a perfect place to purchase local handicrafts, such as hand-carved wooden keepsakes or Indonesian textiles. Be sure to try a piece of Thousand Layer Cake, a decadent local specialty.

Bintan Resorts is the island’s main attraction. Stretching nearly 2,428 hectares (6,000 acres) along the north of the island, the area takes up the entire South China Sea coastline. This family-oriented destination is comprised of several independent resorts. Enjoy an all-inclusive experience and the activities that the resorts offer, from relaxing on white-sand beaches to taking a scuba lesson. There are also several good restaurants and an exciting nightlife.

If you want to enjoy the beaches without the crowds, head to the eastern side of Bintan. Here, the four beaches at Trikora are ideal for trying windsurfing or enjoying a serene picnic. Amenities are scarce here, but Beach Four connects to Bintan Resorts and all its facilities.

Although Bintan Island is generally safe, Bintan Resorts is separated from the rest of the island by checkpoints monitored by armed guards. This part of the island and its industrial development contrast with the pristine white beaches presented by the resort.

Explore the island’s natural beauty at Gunung Bintan Peak. Trek through tropical rainforest as you climb mountain trails. Several small villages at the mountain’s base offer refreshments.

Although there is a small airport on the island, several ferry lines with frequent departures make it easy to get to surrounding islands and cities.
