Bandar Penawar is a town in the Kota Tinggi District of Johor. Its close proximity to Desaru, the beach and resort area makes it a popular area for tourists. You can find a modest selection of shops and restaurants in the area and the food, as is the case across most of Malaysia, is excellent. Let’s take a closer look at what this quiet town has waiting for visitors.
Bandar Penawar serves as the main port to Desaru. It’s surrounding area is filled with peaceful areas exhibiting elaborate architecture and well-preserved buildings. The rich culture of this region is displayed throughout the town, while the local museum is a must see for history lovers.
The coastal resort region surrounding the port has twenty-two kilometres, or thirteen miles, of beach. Snorkelling from this area is known to be among the best that Johor’s islands have to offer. Surfing is another major attraction thanks to the lack of jellyfish and sharks in the area.
Those who are less adventurous can opt to join an excursion to the Sungei Lebam River to see the fireflies near to Desaru. These trips are generally arranged by the Desaru resorts and are well-worth the effort. There is nothing quite like travelling into the jungle at the dead of night. Thousands of fireflies fill the area, especially after rain following a new moon.
The Kota Tinggi Museum is a must-see for anyone who wants to learn more of the history of this fascinating area. Housed in a two-story building, this museum details the history of the Johor Sultanate. You are given the chance to see rare 19th century relics including canvas paintings, archaic musical instrument and ancient weapons used in actual combat.
An amazing exhibit of local design is the Sultan Iskandar Reservoir, an artificial lake within the district. It is fed by many tributaries including the Layang and Johor River. The tranquil setting and reflective waters offer great photo opportunities while allowing you to observe the magnificent man-made achievement up close.
For a rare chance to observe the final resting place of royalty you can’t miss out on the Sultan Mahmud Mangkat Di Julang Mausoleum. It is found in the village of Kampung Makam which is just a short distance from Bandar Penawar. The Moorish Malay architecture is nothing short of amazing, while tour guides and / or locals can detail the macabre history of this site. Don’t forget to ask to be told the tale of the secret murder of Sultan Mahmud Shah II.
This region is well known for its fantastic fishing. The Tanjung Balau Fishermen Museum is a basic but comprehensive collection of fishing artefacts used throughout the area. From replicas of ancient fishing implements, to actual archaic nets and tackle, this is a fascinating journey into the fishing traditions of the locals. Traditional boats, rafts and other vessels are also on display.
There is an excellent diversity of local food served in and around Bandar Penawar. From Japanese cuisine to the mini lobsters which Sungai is famous for, there is a lot to choose from. Due to the great fishing industry, you can always rely on the seafood for freshness and flavour.
