The Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA) is unique in being the only gallery in the whole country which is run according to the European Kunsthalle system of commissioning rather than collecting its exhibits. As well as offering an eclectic and comprehensive overview of contemporary world art, this also means that exhibits are constantly refreshed, allowing visitors to explore an evolving collection over time. The welcoming exhibition space houses innovative sculpture and installations, painting, audio-visual presentations and interactive art by many world-famous practitioners, as well as providing a platform for lesser-known artists at the beginning of their international careers. Check the website before you visit to see a programme of special exhibitions and events, or just turn up and treat yourself to a voyage of artistic discovery. Admission is free, so you can easily pop in for a few minutes when you’re passing, or you can plan a special trip to see an upcoming show. The building itself is also notable for its cutting-edge design – a product of the celebrated Melbourne architectural firm Wood Marsh. Its eye-catching angular shapes and striking façade of red steel have ensured its position as one of the city’s most distinctive cultural landmarks. The Australian Centre for Contemporary Art is located in Southbank, Melbourne, and is easily accessed by numerous tram routes or via a short walk south of the main train terminal at Flinders Street Station. There is also plentiful on-street parking and pay car parks nearby. The gallery is open every day except Mondays, Good Friday and Christmas Day.
