Discover why this riverside town is such an inspiration for artists and craft makers when you sightsee its mountain and rainforest scenery.

Nestled in the foothills of the Great Western Tiers mountain range and with the glassy Meander River flowing through it, Deloraine is full of natural beauty. Explore the limestone caves of a nearby national park, hike through a rainforest and picnic by a waterfall. This natural environment provides daily inspiration for a thriving artistic community that has made the riverside town a major arts and crafts centre.

Get to know Deloraine by walking down streets lined by Georgian and Victorian buildings. Stroll along the riverbank and learn about local history at the Deloraine and District Folk Museum. View heritage buildings and the tools and farming equipment of the town’s early settlers.

Then check out Deloraine’s rich artistic culture. Go to the Great Western Tiers Visitor Centre for the Yarns Artwork in Silk, a large-scale textile depiction of the town and its surroundings. It is divided into four huge panels, each one representing a different season.

Browse galleries such as Deloraine Craft Studio and Bowerbank Mill to see pottery, hand-blown glassware, woodcarvings and paintings by local artists. Navigate the Great Western Tiers Sculpture Trail, which encompasses numerous sculptures in and around the town. Consider coinciding your visit with the annual Tasmanian Craft Fair in November. This is one of the largest working craft fairs in Australia.

Be sure to put outdoor adventures on your itinerary. Walk through the rainforest on the slopes of the Great Western Tiers to get to Liffey Falls. A track leads to the four main cascades and viewing platforms. Head to Mole Creek Karst National Park and go on a guided tour of its limestone caves. In Marakoopa Cave, you will come across underground streams, large caverns and lots of glow-worms. Visit Trowunna Wildlife Park and see native wildlife such as Tasmanian devils, possums and wombats in their natural habitats.

Reach Deloraine by flying into Launceston Airport. Then rent a car for the 40-minute drive to the town and its cultural, scenic and historical attractions.
