A weekend trip to Falun introduces you to plenty of year round outdoor activities in a unique Swedish town.
The charming city of Falun is located in the mid-Sweden province of Dalarna. This is an ideal place for experiencing year round outdoor activities, fascinating attractions and interesting art exhibitions.
However, not all of Falun's sights are located above ground. Join an exciting guided tour more than 60 metres below ground, at the historic copper mine Falu koppargruva, and experience the depths where miners worked. The mine provided Sweden with copper for centuries and is today one of UNESCO's world heritage sites.
Falun offers plenty of ski tracks and is an ideal destination for skiing. Beginners and advanced skiers can try out the slopes in the ski area Lugnet, which has hosted several world cups. In summertime the tracks are perfect for running, biking and hiking.
During your weekend in Falun you can look forward to wonderful nature hikes and spectacular views from the nature reserve Vackelberget, about 40 kilometres north of the city. Another exceptional reserve is located on the northern islands of the lake Runn, where you can swim during the summer and skate in winter. Make a visit to Roxnas udde, a picturesque peninsula just 7 kilometres from central Falun.
If you want to admire the works of one of Sweden's most beloved arts and crafts painters, you will find a museum dedicated to Carl Larsson at the beautiful mansion Carl Larsson-garden just a 15 minute drive from central Falun. The closest airport is Dala Airport outside Borlange, about 25 kilometres from Falun. There are also plenty of train and bus connections to Falun from major Swedish cities.
