Port Antonio

Still glittering from its years as a glamorous getaway for the stars, this secluded Jamaican town offers the chance to escape the crowds and slow down.

Port Antonio’s remote location on the rugged northeast coast, surrounded by lush mountains on one side and the Caribbean Sea on the other, has ensured the pace of life has remained slow and the vibe laid-back. Discover the breathtaking beaches and lush landscapes so commonly associated with Jamaica.

The town first gained fame as a bustling banana port, before becoming a hub for tourism around the turn of the 20th century. Hollywood stars descended decades later, most famously swashbuckling actor Errol Flynn, cementing Port Antonio’s reputation.

Frolic at Frenchman’s Cove beach. This sheltered stretch of sand surrounds a point where a river flows into the sea and is regarded as one of Jamaica’s most beautiful. The beach has even made multiple appearances in films.

Tour the Titchfield Peninsula, where several stately gingerbread-style homes and historic sights are located. Walk down King Street, home to Victorian-era houses that offer a glimpse into Port Antonio’s past. See Fort George, which has been converted into a school, but still sports its defensive cannons.

Float across the aquamarine waters of the Blue LagoonOpens in a new window, a lake that retains an otherworldly shade of blue due to its depth. Hire a local guide to take you out on the water for the day in a traditional wooden vessel.

Marvel at the massive mistake that is Folly Mansion. This dilapidated grand home was the brainchild of an American millionaire and featured 60 rooms spread over two floors. For reasons still not fully understood, the concrete structure began to crumble shortly after being built and now stands in a fascinating state of disrepair. Nearby sits the candy-striped Folly Point Lighthouse, which has stood as a beacon since the year 1888.

Relax at Reach Falls, an enchanting waterfall located 45 minutes from Port Antonio. This cascade has a naturally formed heart-shaped Jacuzzi and was featured in the film Cocktail.

Fly into Kingston or Montego Bay and take a public bus, private coach, or a rental car to Port Antonio, a town that combines quintessential Caribbean charm with a unique history.

Great hotel in a stunning property with really friendly staff at reception. Had an issue with bathroom shower which sprayed onto the wall and then the floor - apparently a result of bath/shower design so the staff couldn't help. Otherwise had a great stay with good food, although the restaurant was ...

Food was unavailable when on menu, subs as well. Food quality was good but lacking flavor. Spa service not available when booked. Couldn’t see the studio and no follow up from staff about seeing or using it. Beautiful and quite definitely relaxing. Close to many thing to do.
