Giulianova

One of the biggest towns on the Abruzzo coast, Giulianova boasts great accommodation, an extensive beach and a bustling port, making it an important maritime hub.

The town is divided into Upper Giulianova and Giulianova Lido the latter, like most towns along the Abruzzo coast, is a recent creation and resulted from the construction of the Adriatic railway around the 1860s. The old town is in the higher part and dates from Roman times. Most of the hotels and tourist facilities are concentrated in the Lido area, which, thanks to the mild climate and proximity to the beach, is a tourist destination at any time of year. What are you waiting for? Arrange your holiday in Giulianova today.

At the heart of the old town, the cathedral has an impressive structure with large 2-metre wide walls. Octagonal and with a hemispherical dome covered with terracotta roof tiles, the building houses the remains of St. Flavian, kept in a crypt below the collegiate. In the old town, at the intersection of Via Amendola and Via Acquaviva, is the largest section of what remains of the ancient wall that once surrounded the city: the tower known as "il Bianco". The tower forms a whole with the fortress and was the chosen retreat of Duke Giulio Antonio Acquaviva in the event of an invasion or popular uprising. The walls were carefully constructed to withstand any kind of attack, particularly cannon attacks. Another important stop during your holiday in Giulianova is the Church of St. Anne, also part of the medieval nucleus, located in the north-western area near the tower. The Church of St. Anne, built in the fifteenth century, is very small and contains an altar in clear late Baroque style, and is considered one of the most important religious buildings in Italy.

If you like walking, Giulianova has much to offer. From the waterfront to the old town of Giulianova Alta, which affords spectacular views and includes many of this lovely town’s ancient sites. The historic waterfront is the stretch of coast that runs from Via Nazario Sauro to Colonia Marina, for approximately seven hundred metres. Further on, at the end of a beautiful square, is the belvedere, once known as the "Mount". Today this area hosts the town’s main religious and secular feasts. The lookout was built in the late 1900s and its elegant square is surrounded by palm trees and fountains.

As for feasts and social events, the Feast of Our Lady of Splendour is the most important in Giulianova for its religious, cultural and emotional value. On 22nd April, the whole province comes together for this event, which recalls the apparition of the Virgin Mary to the farmer Bertolino back in 1557. Another important event is the Julia Jazz Festival, held in the last week of July. The characteristic feature of the festival is that, in addition to listening to concerts, visitors have the chance to experiment with the various instruments in person and learn to play directly from the jazz masters. During the event, in fact, a series of workshops and music lessons are held, delivered by high-quality teachers.
