Palace District

St. Petersburg

The former city square of the Old Russian Empire, this square its famous for holding the 1905 Bloody Sunday and the 1917 October Revolution. A massive square just in front of the Hermitage Museum, its a popular destination where carriages, skaters and tourists mix up.

The statue in the middle is the Alexander Column, a 50 meters tall column thats unique of its kind. This enormous column was placed in the middle of Palace square to celebrate the victory of Russia over Napoleonic France. Unlike its ancient predecessors, at the top of the column there was not a statue of the respective emperor at the time (Alexander I) but of an angel trampling a serpent.

A huge empty space in the centre of St Petersburg, with the incredible Hermitage Museum and Art Gallery on one side. The best times to visit are early in the morning (as in before breakfast when the light is perfect, the air is cool, and the square is deserted) or in the evening. When we were there in July 2015 the ACTUAL soccer World Cup was being shown to the world in the run up to the draw for the 2018 World Cup which Russia is hosting - it's actually very small in comparison to the Champions League trophy!
The church of spilled blood is a magnificent church in St. Petersburg that has been reconstructed and remodeled multiple times. Very whimsical.
The State Hermitage Museum, also known as the Winter Palace, is a real treasure full of treasurers. We spent two days with a tour guide and I can't wait to go back.
