Trent and Mersey Canal approaching Shardlow, Derbyshire. Shardlow Lock is by the cottages on the bend beyond the blue boat. The canal terminates at Derwent Mouth one mile further on.

Aston Lock, Trent and Mersey Canal, Derbyshire The third of six wide locks raising the water level by from Derwent Mouth to Stenson. This one drops the water level by just over eight feet (2.46 metres). Although two narrowboats can enter the chambers side by side (almost fourteen feet together in width)other canal constrictions limit craft to a maximum of ten feet in beam.

Trent and Mersey Canal near Shardlow, Derbyshire The canal was built between the years 1766 and 1777, initially engineered by James Brindley. Here it was completed by 1770 and follows the flat bottomed Trent Valley towards Shardlow, and Derwent Mouth where the canal ends.
