Gaze out across the red roofs of Lisbon and beyond to the Tagus River from this hilltop viewpoint, the highest in the city.
Often overlooked by visitors because of its location outside the well-trodden downtown district, the Senhora do Monte Viewpoint is said to be the best lookout spot in the city. Enjoy bird’s-eye views of some of the city’s most famous landmarks from this elevated platform.
Set atop one of Lisbon’s many hills, this viewpoint, or miradouro as it is known in Portuguese, is well worth the uphill walk required to reach it. After the climb to the top, reward yourself with a refreshing drink from one of the mobile vendors as you soak up the magnificent views.
Look out over the viewpoint’s railings to the attractive cityscape. See if you can spot the São Jorge Castle. This mighty fortress is set on a verdant hill overlooking the Tagus River. Other landmarks, including the skeletal Gothic remains of the Carmo Convent and the Graça Church are also visible from the site. If you are having trouble identifying them, simply consult the information panel to find out which landmarks are where.
Allow ample time to relax at the viewpoint. It is rarely crowded, making it a pleasant place to linger and relax after a busy day’s sightseeing. Consider staying until sunset to witness the city cast under the warm glow of the setting sun.
While here, look for the the small Chapel of Senhora do Monte. A chapel has stood on this site since the 12th century, though the original was razed by the 1755 earthquake. The present-day chapel dates back to the late 18th century. For religious locals, the chapel is thought to be the place to go for women hoping for protection during childbirth.
Find Senhora do Monte Viewpoint in the Graça district of Lisbon. To get here, take a tram or bus to Rua da Graça and walk from there. The nearest metro station is Martim Moniz, which is about a 15-minute walk south from the viewpoint.
