Praia Grande, like other beaches in the western Algarve, was formed during the Miocene epoch, and is bordered by cliffs of bright tones, with fascinating rock formations and curious caves, rich in marine fossils. The tops of the cliffs are covered with green vegetation and striking pine trees.
It’s also rich in historical gems. The Fort of St. John of Arade stands northeast of the beach and, together with the Fortress of Santa Catarina, used to protect the estuary from pirate attacks.
The Praia Grande beach extends for over two kilometres, with golden sand and clear, calm blue waters. There are plenty of beachside restaurants and terraces running along the front, along with showers and bathrooms, and it’s also under lifeguard surveillance all year long. It’s located next to several tourist facilities and a dedicated children’s playground area, as well as a large car parking area.
Windsurfing and pedal boating are just two of the popular beach activities available around here, making it a great choice for those looking for a more active holiday.
The nearby fishing village of Ferragudo is pretty with its narrow streets and white houses, and also has plenty of delectable eateries serving great food, located only a 10-minute walk away from Praia Grande.
