Spend a day at this beautiful beach, a perfect introduction to Sardinia’s characteristic white sands and blue waters.

Pittulongu Beach is covered with fine sands and dotted with pretty seashells. Located a short drive from Olbia, it’s a popular first stop for travellers arriving in the region. Loved by locals and tourists alike, the busy main beach is an ideal destination for a fun-filled afternoon. For a more peaceful day in the sand, head to one of the smaller neighboring beaches.

Pittulongu Beach is comprised of four beaches spread across 0.8 miles (1.3 kilometres) of coastline. Begin at the main beach, La Playa, which is a particular favourite among locals. The beach is bordered by dozens of restaurants and bars. Enjoy a meal while taking in sea views or simply relax with a cold drink.

The waters off the coast are relatively shallow, making it an ideal beach for children to swim at and play safely. Rent a deck chair and lie under the sun or try snorkeling, scuba diving and surfing.

Stroll to quieter Squalo (Shark) Beach, which is separated from La Playa by a small rocky headland. Although smaller than La Playa, this peaceful beach is quite large and bordered by lush Mediterranean vegetation. Continue walking and you’ll reach Pellicano (Pelican) Beach, which is known for its clear waters.

Be sure to visit the last of the four beaches, known as Mare e Rocce (Sea and Rocks). This beach is separated from Squalo and Pellicano by another small rock formation. Mare e Rocce is also quiet compared to the main beach and has a pleasant beach bar.

Keep an eye out for Isola Tavolara (Tavolara Island), which can be seen toward the southeast as you walk along the coastline. Protruding 1640 feet (500 metres) out of the sea, this rectangular limestone massif is home to only a few families and Sardinian mouflon sheep. Take a day trip to this secluded island in the summer.

Pittulongu Beach is located 5 miles (8 kilometres) northeast of Olbia. It can be reached easily by public bus or taxi from the city.
