  • Ritipanna is the Sinhalese term for stilt fishing, which is a traditional method for fishing practiced by most fishermen along the southern coast of Sri Lanka. This art is popularly seen in areas such as Ahangama, Koggala, Welipenna, Kathaluwa and Thalarambe. A narrow pole is tied to a stick that is anchored on the sea bed. Fisher folk climb onto this stick and settle on the pole for a few hours in an effort to catch some fish. Fishermen found on stilts are those who do not have access to sophisticated equipment for fishing. These men can make a living simply with the help of two wooden poles to make a stilt. One pole is nailed onto the sea bed and the other is placed like a cross bar and acts as a plank for the fishermen to sit on. Each stilt can accommodate only one fisherman. For catching fish, they create a rod made of Kithul, and a small plastic bag is tied around their waist to hold the fish that they catch. With one hand they hold onto the stilt and with the other they hold the rod that catches fish. The tradition of stilt fishing will always be practiced by those who cannot afford to invest in modern fishing equipment. #likealocal

A beautiful hotel in a great location, staff excellent as was every meal, compliments to the chefs.. pool very good too. It’s a great hotel but a little dated and air conditioner is very loud but effective. Overal it’s still very good.

Loved my stay here. The staff was very friendly and good food. Pricier food the on the street but tasted good in the hotel. Beautiful to lay out on the sunbed and watch the ocean. Easy access from the hotel to a little beach area on the side. Water is clear and nice

This hotel is outstanding in EVERY aspect, definitely 5 star. The service in every department is exemplary. The staff go beyond their call of duty to ensure your stay is perfect. The facility is constantly maintained to the very highest of standards and the location is perfect. The beach is fabulous and the view from the hotel superb. Can't wait to return and hopefully make it a yearly visit.

Just Amazing, it was the perfect environment to unwind and relax after a busy couple of weeks. I ended my vacation to Sri Lanka at the Fortress and I loved it. The staff service was exceptional, food was so delicious, I wish I had more room to enjoy more of it!! I can’t wait to come back with my family and friends. Thank you for your hospitality.

This may be the first time I've given a 10/10 review. I can't fault this property - the room, the staff, the food plus so much more were all fantastic. Even the beach also gets a 10/10 for being a long and quiet stretch without 'on the beach restaurants'. Totally peaceful. The Fortress was recommended to me by a friend and I look forward to passing it on and to coming back myself.

Hotel oozes class in Koggala

This hotel oozes class from the moment you walk through the door Rooms are lovely Staff are incredible Pool area idilic Food really good and nothing is too much trouble. We went out of season following our son’s cricket tour and this is a lovely base. We booked months ago and I should have checked the rates when I arrived as I had free cancellation. If I had have done I would have saved a lot. The hotel is having major refurb work done whilst we have been here but to be honest I haven’t really noticed.

Hotel oozes class in Koggala

This hotel oozes class from the moment you walk through the door Rooms are lovely Staff are incredible Pool area idilic Food really good and nothing is too much trouble. We went out of season following our son’s cricket tour and this is a lovely base. We booked months ago and I should have checked the rates when I arrived as I had free cancellation. If I had have done I would have saved 55% on what I would have paid as the hotel had a huge discount . The hotel is having major refurb work done whilst we have been here but to be honest I haven’t really noticed.

Outstanding....deserves high rating!

Really superb property. Even though it has a heritage look, it's relatively newly built, so very comfortable, even if lacking in authenticity. Stunning location right by sea, but nothing outside to do, within walking distance. Bed so comfortable, fabulous view and nice restaurant area, with good breakfast. It wasn't clear to me until I was checking. out if there was a 'natural' pool in the coral area or was it just the swimming pool they said to use, as not allowed to swim in sea due to waves (fair advice). If there is a natural pool safe for swimming they should let guests know as I would have liked to swim in the sea and not just the pool. Perfectly clean and staff super responsive. Bath very nice but shower had very low water pressure. Highly recommend if you want somewhere comfortable and quiet. Not a lively resort with activities, but a true chill out spot by nature. Loved listening to waves from balcony in evening. Would love to return some day!

The Fortress is a simply magnificent Resort. This beach front Resort has all the facilities you can ever want for a relaxing and truly enjoyable experience. (pools, spa, gym, great restaurants and Bar, delicious and an array of foods just to name a few.) The staff are amazing, very hospitable and always welcoming and friendly. We travelled from Australia and stayed two nights in the Ocean room which was very spacious and clean with all the facilities you need. We had our Wedding Ceremony at the Fortress and there is simply no words to describe the wonderful experience we had. Every aspect of our wedding ceremony was professionally and meticulously arranged by the staff at the Fortress. From organising the necessary marriage documents to the floral arrangements, wedding bouquets and bower, decorations, cake, celebrant, music, photography, special celebratory dinner, and the list goes on., we couldn’t have been happier with all of these things and the very best service we received at the Fortress. A special mention to our wedding coordinator ‘GAYANI’ who went above and beyond to make sure that our wedding ceremony was successful and memorable. Her attention to detail and dedication to make sure we were happy with all the arrangements is something we will always remember and be grateful for. From the time we arrived until we checked out the service was exceptional. All the staff never fail to smile and greet us. The food was delicious & the atmosphere was refreshing.

Large style beach resort. Very good dining and drink options across the 3 restaurants. Initially stayed in a room with a plunge pool which was too humid for our liking but had a half day's stay in another room upstairs without a pool and it was very nice with great views of the facility, pool and ocean.

We love The Fortress

Our third stay at the Fortress, it never disappoints. Beautiful hotel and grounds, food is amazing with full menu room service. Can sit on a sun lounge at high tide and watch turtles feeding in the ocean in front of you or release baby turtles from the hatchery on site. What sets it apart is the service, our son is 5 and was so well cared for by the staff.
