We found our luggage had been stolen from while inside a locked private room. After bringing this to the attention of staff they told us the footage had been deleted and several staff lied to us in the process. At the police station we learned this was a known problem for this property. Other guests need to be careful around the staff of this place.

Beware - Theft. While staying at Curiocity in a private room someone came in to our locked private room and stole every last bit of our money from hidden pockets in three different bags. We reported to staff but they said all the footage that showed the theft was deleted. Multiple staff members lied to us when dealing with the incident and didn’t help us at all. The owner then treated us very badly. I hate to write bad reviews but I want to warn fellow travelers about this place.

Overall decent stay. There are nice kitchen facilities, but the showers have low water pressure and it’s hard to regulate the temperature. The bar downstairs can make it a bit noisy, but not too bad. Lots of good restaurants around the neighborhood.

The staff was very helpful and arranged tours and trip to airport, helped with Wi-fi connection, and warned about streets to avoid when walking to Downtown.

Awesome staff & nice space

The staff was awesome--incredibly friendly and helpful. They went above and beyond to ensure that guests were taken care of, even to the point of providing an escort to walk me to the pickup point and wait with me for my tour bus. I enjoyed an excellent coffee at the bar in the morning on my final day. This hotel is very accommodating as far as luggage storage, and they also have safes for valuables. We did have an extended power outage, but this was not the hotel's fault. My room was spacious and linens clean. Overall, I was happy with the experience, despite being a bit disappointed that the area was not safely walkable for a solo tourist.

Curiocity and Maboneng are truly gems of Joburg

It's rare that I give perfect marks across the board, but Curiocity earned it! I booked 2-weeks at Curiocity via Hotels.com, and they put me in their sister hotel (12 Decades) right down the street. From what I gather, Curiocity is the hostel and 12-Decades is the hotel. I was absolutely impressed! The staff were great, the hotel itself was awesome (it is an art-themed hotel, and each room has a different motif), and the neighborhood is wonderful. Maboneng is an ultra-hip part of Johannesburg with great cuisine (PataPata, Ravioli, Soul Souvlaki, Bertrand's cafe) and a really cool vibe. I'm a bit of a straight-laced guy, but even I loved the bohemian feel of the area. The only con was that the wi-fi was sometimes difficult to connect to. I absolutely recommend Curiocity, and would stay there again in a heart-beat.

I had an amazing time at this hostel. Really clean and great staff. Beds are really nice and free WiFi is always great. Great okace to meet new people and go in tours in the city. But be warned as while the block it is on is really nice, the larger neighborhood I did not feel was very safe at all.

One of a kind

Fantastic artsy place, original and unique, as were all the rooms too. Very cool. Great locations with plenty of places to eat up and down the street. The side of our bedding wasn't the cleanest, as a booger was found, but given the overall cleanliness of the entire place and the rest of our room I'm chalking that up to an anomaly. I highly recommend for the creative rooms and uniqueness of them all.

Hostel que quer ser "moderninho"

Deixa muito a desejar, grupo de hóspedes que acham que é o dono do Hotel, gritam a noite inteira, sem a menor preocupação com os outros hóspedes, sem ação dos funcionários... Bairro que só funciona no fds...fora isso o lugar é morto....., não se pode caminhar em nenhuma outra rua do bairro, por questão de segurança (recomendação do próprio hotel)....

Best BackPackers in Johannesburg

Favorite night stay in Johannesburg was at Curiocity. The staff is friendly and the environment welcoming. Very clean with great Wifi! Best part is the comfortable beds. I slept like a baby. Highly recommended!

Such a great place, even bedbugs want to stay here

So the place is nice, the neighborhood is amazing - but I got bedbugs in one of the dorm... They did wash my clothes, they did change the bed in the room, so should be ok now. This happens I guess, but I would have appreciate a reimbursement of that night at least, as I spent about 9-10 days there!

Staff is very helpful about how to get around Johannesburg safely. Located in Maboneng which is a small area that is walkable during the daytime, hip and upcoming area with good restaurants. A great deal for the price, and many interesting people to meet!

Beautiful accommodation in hip Maboneng

Our room in the 12 Decades art hotel (booked through Curiocity) was fantastic, the staff was friendly and helpful and the food in the area was awesome. Great urban art and entrepreneurship in Maboneng!

Hidden Gem Hostel

My first experience staying in or near a hostel. The hostel had a hotel about a block away from the hostel that I stayed at and I was blown away! I ended up stay in 3 of the 12 themed rooms at the Decades Hotel. So beautifully decorated and thoughtful. The staff was friendly, accommodating, and all around amazing at the hostel and the hotel. I quickly felt right at home there! I couldn't have asked for a better experience staying a Curiocity Backpackers and the 12 Decades Hotel!
