"There was parking outside every unit for 1 vehicle. The rooms were fresh and provided the needed towels and blankets. Extra pillows and blankets in the room too. The owner Simon went above and beyond when we arrived, during a power cut (Narly storm chased us into Hokitika). He made sure we knew what was open for food and that we had a candle for a room until the power came back on."

This hotel is old (they don’t call it “historic” for nothing) and run down (featuring peeling wallpaper, a saggy matress, threadbare carpet and a kitchen that looks like it was built in the 80s). Making things worse, there is literally not a single thing of interest in Kumara (it only exists because it is a stop on the West Coast Wilderness Trail). "WARNING: only hotel in the world with a 16:00 check in. If you can’t be bothered to staff the hotel at least leave a key box like every other hotel. Unfortunately we didn’t have time to waste waiting for 16:00 so checked into the Beachfront hotel in town for the same price and standard check in. "
