"Had a wonderful stay at the Penny Bun. It has a homely feel with very friendly staff. The view of the surrounding countryside was impressive especially during breakfast with the restaurant large windows. "

"I have stayed at Cedar Court before and it has generally been fine. This time, however, I booked a Superior room, as usual, but was disappointed to find that the original bathroom (with bath) had been ripped out and replaced by a walk-in shower. I personally prefer a bath, and on enquiring at reception I was told that all the ‘Superior’ rooms have had their baths removed. So if you want a bath, don’t book a ‘Superior’ room. Also, the double bed was strangely uncomfortable, the mattress seemingly not flat and tending to roll us off the sides of the bed. On the positive side, the barman was very helpful!"
DoubleTree by Hilton Harrogate Majestic Hotel & Spa
4/10 Poor
"I stay in hotels around six times a month, and I can honestly say this was one of the poorest experiences I’ve had in a long time.
In the restaurant, every steak dish on the menu was unavailable, and the only real alternative offered was a burger. When the food arrived, I asked for condiments — they never appeared. The place was quiet, yet no one made eye contact or checked in, despite me being seated right beside the bar. I eventually ordered dessert, waited 15 minutes, and had to chase it up. Seconds after I asked, it suddenly appeared, clearly forgotten about. To top it off, a service charge was added automatically, which felt completely undeserved.
The room wasn’t much better. I was woken just after 6am by the shower in the next room — unbelievably loud, far beyond anything I’ve ever heard in a hotel.
At checkout, I was told I had an £18 parking charge. When I questioned it, I was told it had “nothing to do with them” because it was a third‑party company, despite the hotel collecting the payment. Not exactly taking ownership of the guest experience.
Overall, the hotel trades on its name, not its standards. Very poor"
"Staff were very nice and attentive. The hotel was clean, tidy and for the most part, well presented.
When I searched for a hotel, I applied the filter for free parking. This is not the case with this hotel as I was charged extra for parking.
I can only comment on the room I stayed in but it was quite dated. Windows wouldn't stay open and huge flakes of paint pealing off the radiators exposing old paint underneath.
Breakfast: A great selection but the cooked items had sat under the heat lamps for far to long and were hard and chewy.
The continental items were also a good selection and much more palatable.
The hotel is perfectly located, being a short walk from anywhere you might like to go or see in Harrogate.
I would stay again but I'd avoid the cooked breakfast. "
"There was no toilet brush in the bathroom, no extractor fan to take away smells and shower steam. There was no side table on one side of the bed, glasses of water, cups of tea, mobile phone and personal items had to placed on the floor beside the bed. Room was clean and tidy"
"Standards seems to have gone down, quite a lot of dust around. The lift still being out of commission is a problem and doesn't seem to have been mentioned on the description. I believe this is a long term problem as the staff indicated that "spare parts" were no longer available.
Very young staff and hit and miss service. Good position though."
