Evreux

Travel Guide

Stroll through manicured gardens, visit an imposing gothic cathedral and admire the picturesque Normandy landscape around this 2000-year-old city.

Évreux is one of the oldest cities in France, a fascinating place that is also known as the Episcopal City for its two important religious monuments. With gothic buildings, a cathedral that's almost 1,000 years old, Roman ruins and riverside walks, there is no shortage of things to see and do.

Évreux dates back to Roman times when the area was conquered by Julius Caesar. Over the centuries it has survived attacks by the Vandals, the Normans and the English. Following air raid damage during World War II, much of the city centre was rebuilt.

Make Notre Dame Cathedral your first stop. This enormous 11th-century structure with its towers and elaborate façades is the town’s most prominent landmark. Adjoining the south side of the cathedral is the Bishop's Palace, which dates back to the 15th century. Inside is the Museum of Arts, History and Archeology, featuring archeological relics and medieval art and furniture. Go to Saint Taurine Abbey for the stained glass windows and ornate silver shrine.

Enjoy the green spaces in and around the city. Stroll through Francois Mitterrand Park and relax in the rose garden at Miserey Castle. Go hiking or cycling along the Iton River and through the forest and countryside surrounding the city. Drive approximately 20 miles (32 kilometres) outside of Évreux for the Monet gardens at Giverny, the most popular gardens in France. Another fascinating daytrip is to the Gallo-Roman archaeological site of Gisacum, less than 5 miles (8 kilometres) southeast of the city. Investigate the remains of a Roman palace, theatre and baths.

In the evening, dine on traditional French fare at a cosy bistro, then treat yourself to a dance show at La Scène Nationale Évreux. The cultural venue hosts performances throughout the year.

Évreux is in eastern Normandy, approximately 60 miles (96.5 kilometres) from Paris. The train from the French capital can get you here in under an hour. Get around on foot, by public transport or by renting a car or bicycle and let the city fascinate you with its religious architecture and natural scenery.

Resort style, Excellent for Family trip!!
"The room and the service is excellent. The location of the resort was little remote for me driving into it at night time. I wish they had a larger sign and an instruction on how to enter the property at night time. The resort MUST fix the stairs in the lobby area. Big minus for me."
