This city in the far east of North Holland is a paradise for culture lovers and families with kids. Why not spend a weekend in Enkhuizen?

From a big open-air museum to an old city gate, Enkhuizen has something for everyone. It’s also the perfect place to spend the day outdoors. Discover the parks or hire a boat.

Enkhuizen has an old history and was mentioned in documents as early as the 13th century. After the Zuiderzee was created, it became an important town for shipping and fishing. It quickly grew into a sizeable city and walls were erected, a project that lasted until the 16th century.

You can still see traces of the city’s old defensive walls today. For example, Drommedaris, which is the old southern gateway to the city and an impressive structure.

If you'd like to learn more about the local history, the family-friendly Zuiderzeemuseum is a good place to start. It's actually an open-air museum where you can see what life looked like in Enkhuizen before the Afsluitdijk was built. Another must for the whole family is Sprookjeswonderland, a theme park with all kinds of attractions for kids.

If the weather is good and you feel like going out into nature, Snouck van Loosenpark is a good place to go. Wilhelminaplantsoen is a nice park to relax in.

When you've seen everything there is to see in the city, head for the water! A number of boat tours are organised in and around Enkhuizen. You can also hire a boat and head out with your family or friends on you own. If you prefer dry ground, hire a bicycle and head out of town.

Enkhuizen has a train station, making it easy to reach by public transport. There are a number of direct trains from Amsterdam that will get you to Enkhuizen in an hour. If you're travelling around the Netherlands by car, the A6 or A7 will get you to Enkhuizen from the Randstad.

Enjoy the water, the canals and the culture of the picturesque city of Enkhuizen in the West-Friesland region of the province of North Holland.

Spacious room that was fun to hang out in. Our daughter loved the bunk bed. We would have preferred one large mattress on the double bed.
