Elche
A kind of exotic beach in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea
Elche

Discover another side to the Mediterranean in Elche, where you can lose yourself among thousands of palm trees, take a walk through impressive monuments and rest on its beaches.

Elche is well-known for shoe-making and for its magnificent palm grove, which can boast the honour of being the largest in all of Europe, but its attractions go far beyond just that: discover them as you stroll through the old town, sunbathe on its great beaches or have something to eat on the terraces in the town centre.

If you want to enjoy an authentic cultural treasure, organise your holidays in Elche for August, when the famous mystery play of Elche is held, a representation of the assumption of the Virgin Mary that dates back to medieval times and has been declared Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. It’s held in the basilica of Santa Maria de Elche, a monument with a tower offering spectacular views of the palm grove. If you’d rather visit the city at another time of year, you’ll find a virtual recreation of the Mystery at La Fiesta museum.

Don’t miss the Arab Baths, located in the basement of the La Merced convent, one of the few examples of Islamic architecture still preserved in the region. Also visit the Archaeology and History Museum of Elche (MAHE), with a rich patrimony that will fascinate you. If you’re looking for cheap holidays to Elche to take your children, don’t miss the Paleontological museum, which includes a 3D reproduction of a collection of bones.

Make the most of Elche’s over five miles of coastline by sunbathing and taking a dip in the clear blue waters of beaches such as El Altet, El Pinet or El Carabassi. Also, discover the city’s unique natural surroundings, nestled in Elche’s palm grove, a massive stretch of land with 200,000 palm trees spread throughout the groves.

If you want to take advantage of holiday deals to Elche, you can reach the city by car, train or bus. The nearest airport is Alicante, which is approximately 6 miles away.
