Trier, founded in 16 B.C. as “Augusta Treverorum”, is often referred to as the “Rome of the North”. The city has nine World Heritage sites and they are all of Roman origin. One of them is the “Porta Nigra” or Black Gate (A.D. 170), the only one of the original four city gates still standing. The sandstone structure survived only because it later became a church. There’s not much to see inside today, but you can climb up into the complex and get some nice views of the city.
Trier is a good starting point for a trip through the Moselle valley. #History
