D'Entrecasteaux National Park

I then lay awake for the rest of the night, awaiting a sunrise that also turned out to be mediocre so I thought I’d check out the cliffs and, how easy did that turn out to be.
Around the lighthouse area is the Pupulong Walk Trail and it skirts the cliffs, offering views of landscapes that are perfectly described by the adjective “bizarre”.
Undercuts with abstract natural designs and caves carved in inconceivable shapes are there for the viewing.
The walk, from Tookalup, where there are toilets, to Point D’Entrecasteaux is only 1.3 kilometres long and it’s on freshly laid bitumen. There are many warnings about not risking the cliff edges but past trails indicate that some have ignored them.
Other older established walks on a gravel base lead off in other directions but I chose not to be diverted this time. Instead, I opted for nearby Salmon Beach where the road sign said “Not suitable for caravans and buses”.
The way in however, was newly sealed road and easy, though curvy, driving. It’s the carpark where there’s a problem because the turning circle would definitely make life difficult if you were towing something.
It’s from here that you take the short stroll across the dunes to this pristine beach.
This is the sort of place I can tarry for hours, feeling the soft grains squeeze up between my toes as I stroll along white sands towards the dominant ramparts of headlands to the west.
You feel like you want to walk forever, past occasional sandstone outcrops while the offshore breeze stands up the crystal clear waters before the swell collapses in a foamy white display near the shore.
Beside you the grass of the dunes is ruffled by the wind and the occasional grain of sand rolls down off the top. The only other people are an odd fisherman or two and they are only too happy to have a chat.
Western Australia offers many such experiences like this, may I recommend you go out and get yourself one.
