Everything was good. Except for the fact that there were only blinds and no curtains on the windows. So when the sun can game up we were up also. Good breakfast and a nice pub right down the street. I would stay again but would ask for a room with curtains

Nice property that appears to be in the middle of a refurbishment. Reception staff had gone out when I arrived so had to wait to gain access to the property. Room was comfortable with newly fitted carpets, however no air conditioning or fan available, this meant leaving the window open and noise pollution from outside resulted in a disturbed sleep. Large shower in the bathroom with plenty of hot water and good pressure. Breakfast was average and only served until 8:30am.

My wife and I booked the Gateway just a few days before our stay, as we were attending an event in Cardiff. It turned out to be a very good choice. I'd rang in advance to see about early check-in, which was helpfully accommodated by the staff, and our room was just what we needed for one night. It was comfortable and clean, there was parking outside, and the breakfast the following morning hit the spot too. It was no more than quarter of an hour on foot to Newport train station, all main road and into the centre, and we had no problems walking back after midnight. Don't expect high-class luxury but if you just need a base for your stay before going off elsewhere, you won't go far wrong.

The brief stay

When we arrived at the Gateway Hotel at 3.30pm the front door was locked, so had to phone the hotel to let us in. The reception was closed, when they said it would be manned from 3pm to 10.30pm. The double room was clean, but no information folder found in room. No fire escape information given. Breakfast was ok, but we did miss the proper pork bacon. On the postive side, we requested a ground floor room, which was given.
