  • Dungeness on Cumberland Island, Georgia, is a ruined mansion that is part of a historic district that was the home of several families significant in American history. James Oglethorpe first built on Cumberland Island in 1736, building a hunting lodge that he named Dungeness. Oglethorpe named the place after Dungeness, in England. The next Dungeness was the legacy of Revolutionary War hero Nathanael Greene, who had acquired 11,000 acres of island land in exchange for a bad debt. His widow built a four-story tabby mansion in 1803, over a Timucuan shell mound. During the War of 1812 the island was occupied by the British, who used the house as a headquarters. In 1818 Henry “Light-Horse Harry” Lee, a dashing cavalry commander during the Revolutionary War and father of Robert E. Lee, stayed at the house until his death on March 25, 1818, cared for by Greene's daughter Louisa, and was laid to rest in nearby cemetery with full military honors provided by an American fleet stationed at St. Marys, Georgia. The house was abandoned during the U.S. Civil War and burned in 1866. In the 1880s the property was purchased by Thomas M. Carnegie, brother of Andrew Carnegie, who began to build a new mansion on the site. The 59-room Queen Anne style mansion and grounds were completed after Carnegie's death in 1886. His wife Lucy continued to live at Dungeness and built other estates for her children, including Greyfield for Margaret Carnegie, Plum Orchard for George Lauder Carnegie, and Stafford Plantation. By this time, the Carnegies owned 90% of the island. The Carnegies moved out of Dungeness in 1925. In 1959 the Dungeness mansion was destroyed by fire, alleged to be arson. The ruins are today preserved by the National Park Service as part of Cumberland Island National Seashore. They were acquired by the Park Service in 1972.

Wonderful place that makes you feel at home! Beautiful rooms, located within walking distance to shopping, the river, and fantastic restaurants. Our hostess was so accommodating, she provided amazing breakfasts and afternoon snacks and wine. We will return!

We really enjoyed our stay at the Goodbread Inn. We were in the Gable and Lombard suite, which was very unique jyst like the entire B&B. The hostess Mardja was wonderful. We loved the surrounding area of St. Mary's as well.

This guesthouse was a perfect overnight spot for us on our travels. It is an old house delightfully restored, comfortable, quiet and centrally located near the water. Included is a delicious hot breakfast. We’d definitely stay there again.

Love this place

Our third time stopping here while on the road. While it’s a bit off the highway it’s in a charming town with cute shops and restaurants. The inn is comfortable, the staff friendly and the breakfast outstanding. Very dog friendly too!

This is the second stay for me and just as enjoyable as the first time. Very convenient to down town and a great place to stay. Hostess is lovely and offers some delious cookies upon arrival, wine in the evening and a fabulous breakfast with juice and coffee. Rooms are all themed and plenty of room for 2 adults and small children.

This is our third time staying here! Owner is delightful and goes to every effort to make your stay comfortable. Breakfast is beautifully prepared. You can walk to the Cumberland Island ferry and to restaurants. Owner will facilitate a purchase of lunch to take on the ferry. The house is done in a victorian style. Nice front porch for relaxing.

Honeymoon Getaway

Wonderful, relaxing quick honeymoon getaway from Jacksonville. Mardja is a fabulous hostess and provides a delicious breakfast for her guests, as well as complimentary wine and snacks. We loved the initial stay so much that we visited again a month later. We'll be back in 2025!

Located right in downtown St. Mary’s near the riverfront. Very cute town with friendly people, great restaurants. The proprietor, Mardja, was very gracious and accommodating. The B&B is a beautiful Victorian with themed bedrooms. All very comfortable. Great porches, too! Loved it.

I had a fantastic overnight stay at Goodbread House. My room was clean and comfortable and the location was perfect for exploring St. Mary's. Our host was very communicative and responded to our questions/requests quickly. Breakfast was delish! Would definitely stay there again.

Overnight stay.

The house was lovely and very walkable. It was full of antiques, which are pretty to look at but not very comfortable to use. The bed in the Lancelot room was very mushy and sagged in the middle. The bathroom was huge and comfortable. The upstairs porch was lovely. Breakfast was very tasty. I would stay here again, in a different room.

Our host called us on check in day to verify arrival time and helped us switch rooms last minute when she saw I had a baby with a stroller and couldn’t navigate the stairs. Very accommodating and friendly. We even got a packed breakfast since we had to leave early. A true BnB experience.

Lovely Place to Stay in St. Mary's

We a lovely stay, the town is wonderful, the room was clean, the bed was comfortable and the hosts were lovely as well. Thank you. As a note to anyone booking the ferry, wait until the day of, it was pouring rain all day, but due to us not giving 8 days or 6 hours notice we were out 90.00, they offered us a transfer, but told us that we had to give them a date that day and we had not received the email until the next morning, this has nothing to do with the Inn, only the ferry ride.

A very charming B&B, exactly as described and pictured. The proprietor has additional staff as she should so we did not see much of her. For reference, breakfast was delicious each morning we were served a plate with different items: the first morning a berry parfait, a small frittata and a slice of squash bread. The second morning a blueberry bread pudding, two small patty sausages and grapes. Orange juice was offered as well as tea and coffee. It is an old house and as might be expected the temperature is difficult to control precisely. Our only issue was that both nights (in late June) we were quite cold. So be warned to not assume that your lightest bedclothes will keep you warm enough.
