"Hotel was undergoing renovations but that did not interfeer with stay and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The room was spacious and well stocked but as it had a kitchenette a few more basics would be helpful for longer stays like ours. However the amenities were good, the bed comfortable and the bathroom was generous. The location is quiet and feels safe, with bars, restaurants and grocery stores within walking distance. Metro station from navy yard via the green line is a few minutes...

Frederick Douglass and his wife bought this house in 1877. Tours are available during the day and are very worthwhile. The visitor center as well as the movie they show are dated but also worthwhile. Frederick was born a slave sometime around 1818 and would go on to become a highly respected abolitionist, newspaper owner/editor, civil rights advocate and staunch advocate for women’s rights. He would die in this home in 1895.
