A row of colorful houses by a lake with a small pond in the foreground.
A cozy room with a bookshelf, a globe, a plant, and a red couch.
A cobblestone street lined with colorful buildings, a bicycle, and ivy-covered walls.

Take in the storied history of the town's well-preserved buildings, enjoy the lush green scenery or drop in at one of the galleries to sample the local arts scene.

When you travel to Aeroskobing on the island of Aero, you'll be swept away by its idyllic island charm, seaside character and quaint historic centre. The old settlement is affectionately known as "The Fairytale Town", and it won't take you long to see why as you stroll down its cobblestone streets and marvel at its exceptionally well-preserved 18th century homes – a heritage the local community takes pride in protecting. In fact, the charming ambience and stunning architecture have been so well maintained over the years that the town was even awarded the international Europa Nostra prize for European cultural heritage preservation - and it really shows.

When hunger strikes, you'll be pleased to find that the town's harbour is on the lee side of nearby Dejro island – so the windy Danish weather won't stop you from enjoying a visit to the Aeroskobing Rogeri smokehouse. Here you can feast on smoked herring fillets to your heart's content, and wash them down with Aero's famous bitter, Riga, or "balsam" as the locals call it. Afterwards you can pop round the corner to Den Gamle Kobmandsgaard ("The Old Marketplace"), where you'll be able to buy all sorts of local specialities and exotic treats to enjoy in the town's charming cafés or to take home with you.

And if you're hungry for art as well, the Coast Gallery offers a fine collection of works by local artist Henrik Thorsoe, alongside the expressive painting and photography of Naja Abelsen. If that doesn't satisfy your cravings, there's even more art and culture to be found at the Sofartsmuseum ("Maritime Museum") in the nearby town of Marstal. Here you'll find a grand exhibition of Greenland-inspired paintings by Carl Rasmussen, alongside model ships and maritime curiosities. Parents with children in tow can dive into the area's fascinating history through a range of entertaining activities. The kids will even get the opportunity to stand at the helm of an old freighter!

When the call of the wild beckons, you can get out of the town and explore Aero's rugged coastline during your holiday in Aeroskobing. Voderup Klint is a 30 metre-high bluff on the south side of the island which offers unique geological features found in only one other place in Denmark. You can make your way here and to many other parts of the island by taking the local bus service, which is completely free-of-charge. Grasten Nor, for example, is another great spot nearby. This marshy dammed-up grassland offers the ideal vantage point for viewing the area's rich bird- and animal wildlife. Weather permitting, you can also visit one of Aeroskobing's lovely sandy beaches and enjoy a dip after a long day on your feet - or simply bask in the sun all day during your weekend stay in Aeroskobing.

Aeroskobing on the island of Aero offers the perfect mix of Danish hygge and authentic maritime atmosphere – it's a fantastic place with a unique history that's just waiting to be explored.

"Lovely area, but try to get a room higher up, unfortunately there was a lot of noise on the first floor, you can hear staff on their break talking very loudly at 1am and banging around. Nice breakfast and comfortable beds"
