"If you want to have a local experience and get to know the local indigenous people, I highly recommend El Portal. It is owned and run by people from the local community. It is right next to the river, the caves and the pools of Semuc Champey. So from your room you can just walk down the river and have a swim, while chatting with locals. "This place is an absolute gem. We are budget travelers and you get what you get sometimes, but Posada San Vicente exceeded our expectations. "We had a room on the top floor and there was an accompanying terrace with a table and some chairs. I had my morning coffee there, as they have a kitchen with a microwave and a fridge downstairs. The room was spacious and they had air conditioning, which was greatly appreciated as it was incredibly hot. There were a lot of stairs to climb, but we had a view of the lake.
