The Pros: The hotel is big, with wonderful mountain and ocean views. Rooms are big. The staff was mostly very courteous.
The Cons: Built in the 1980s, the hotel doesn’t appear to have been renovated since then, giving it a “lost in time” feel. Very outdated facilities for charging electronic devices. Beds not comfortable. Food at the restaurant is expensive and mediocre. The hotel is also A LONG WAY from the ferry terminal (50 minutes) and the airport (35 minutes). Without a car, it would not be practical to reserve this accommodation.
The food at the restaurant is not that great and costly. The onsen ( outdoor and indoor) and large swimming pool are great and beautiful. Thanks to the very nice Japanese lady that speak english with an Australian accent, she was very helpful - too bad she is only working in the restaurant and not at the front desk! If you plays a game of pool, the manager will rudely stop your game if your game is lasting a little more than the money and time you paid (2,000 yen per hour). Very rude, unprofessional and cheap. The lounge/ bar listed under Expedia for this hotel doesn’t exist! Ocean and forest views are amazing. A local bus is located in front of the hotel.

Onsen gift shop staff service overall. Spacious rooms great view!!
I ended up with a sinus infection the day we arrived. After a horrible fever and 24 hours of worrying i would need to end my trip early, i decided to request assistance from the front desk in making an appointment with the local hospital. After not being avle to get a taxi the Vice Manager of the hotel drove me in his personal vehicle and waited 45 minutes when the Dr came out. Amazing service. The hotel was also very clean and food was always incredible.
The hotel uniquely has excellent views of both the ocean and the mountain and they maintain an incredible garden grounds with access to a nearby waterfall. They keep everything you’d find in one of the towns: restaurant, hiking shop, karaoke, etc all within the hotel which was incredibly convenient
This hotel-resort stands atop a ridge with a wide view of the lush forests below and, about a kilometer away, the ocean. Behind stand dramatic granite heights, continually changing in appearance as they play with the sun, the clouds and the rains.
Everything about the hotel is designed to maximize a comfortable intimacy with the island, Yakushima. Guests entering the lobby for the first time halt, mouths open, as they are confronted with a vast, ancient, apparently living cedar tree which forms the center-piece of the six-story all-glass lobby, huge blue mountains forming the backdrop through spotlessly clear glass. Lobby, lounges, dining areas and rooms all have large expanses of glass revealing mountains or sea, depending on the side of the building.
The rooms themselves are large even by North American standards, with furnished balconies, spacious seating area, comfortable beds, and a suite of rooms where we would expect a bathroom.
The grounds are just as spectacular, with an artificial waterfall/fountain - illuminated in the evening - walking trails through jungle (we were warned to be careful of the moneys) and a somewhat challenging trail to a spectacular natural waterfall some 1.5 km from the hotel.
Given my colorful prose, you might think I was paid to write this. Quite the contrary - it was a very costly, but memorable, stay. Worth it? Certainly, if only once in a lifetime!
