Whiskeytown Lake

The I-5 corridor in northern California can be pretty bleak in the summer months, but you can still find an oasis here and there. This one is west of Redding, maybe about a half-hour off the Interstate. Drive west on highway 299, past Whiskytown Lake and look for a sign for Crystal Creek. This multi-tiered waterfall surrounded in green is just the thing!
TRAVEL TIP: Have a long, overnight flight coming up? Check out the various travel pillows that let you lean forward and plant your face into them! I used one on my last trip to India, and was amazed at how well I slept!

The water is dreamy and there is very little traffic on the lake or the road right behind me. I just unpacked my fold up chair and I was ready

A year after Whiskeytown, California was torched in the Carr Fire in July of 2018, the skeletal remains of trees still line the hills and valleys all the way to the lake’s edge.

The area is hazy today as smoke from a fire in southern Oregon drifts down into Northern California.

If you go along the bridge just beyond Paige road park on the right

Avoid the campground crowd by just parking on the bridge and set up shop...the place is lightly trafficked. In 3 hours I only saw one family and a few boats far offshore.
