Stroll along tree-lined pathways and visit historic buildings, museums, galleries and sports arenas while experiencing life at one of Alabama’s oldest universities.

The lively college life of the University of Alabama takes place amid a picturesque 1,000-acre (400-hectare) campus in the heart of Tuscaloosa. Founded in 1831, it is one of the oldest universities in Alabama. Delve into the university’s history and culture at museums and galleries, experience sporting passions at the campus stadiums or relax on the tree-lined lawns.

Start your visit at The Quad, an area of open green spaces and walkways where students come to relax, study and play sports. Spot historic landmarks, including the Denny Chimes bell tower and the Amelia Gayle Gorgas Library. Check out the 19th-century President’s Mansion, the official campus residence of the university president. Find some of the campus’ oldest buildings in the Gorgas-Manly Historic District, such as Gorgas House.

Discover ethnological, geological and zoological artifacts at the Alabama Museum of Natural History. See contemporary art exhibitions at the Sarah Moody Gallery of Art. At the Paul W. Bryant Museum exhibits celebrate the university’s sporting achievements since 1892.

Sports fans will appreciate the chance to watch a college football match at the 102,000-capacity Bryant-Denny Stadium, one of several sporting venues on the campus. Join a guided tour for a behind-the-scenes look at the stadium, including visits to the locker room and press box. Stroll along the Walk of Champions to see monuments and statues dedicated to the successes of the Alabama Crimson Tide football team, its players and coaches.

The university is a 10-minute drive from downtown Tuscaloosa. Catch the trolley from the downtown area or walk to the campus along the picturesque Riverwalk Tuscaloosa. If arriving by car then the campus has three pay-and-display car parks.

It’s free to walk around the campus. Find the opening times and admission fees of the museums and galleries on the university’s official website. Prospective students might want to schedule a 2-hour guided tour of the campus. Current students act as tour guides and provide an insight into the university’s history and lifestyle. Advance bookings are recommended.
