Ed and Ethel Dalby brought this wheel by boat from Seattle in 1924, where it had been employed as part of a cable car system (likely on Queen Anne Hill). They attached dredge buckets re-purposed from Seattle's Denny Hill regrade and generated enough electricity to power their home and several cabins until the 1940s.
This Pacific Northwest resort and spa sits on the glacier-carved Hood Canal and offers Seattleites a pleasant escape from the urban jungle. While there are plenty of summertime activities on the canal itself, the resort is also a cozy place to hole-up during the winter months. The indoor pool, giant hot tub, sauna, steam room and spa offer plenty of opportunities to wind down.
The resort great room is the perfect place to mingle with friends or simply enjoy a book in front of the massive stone hearth. On a clear day you may also want to sit back and enjoy the view, as the Olympic Mountains rise above the Hood Canal. Low-key evening events are hosted here on weekends, such as the house-infused chocolate and port wine tasting the night we arrived.
