The area of Tuusula stretches along the south side of Lake Tuusula, less than 20 miles away from Helsinki. Whilst on holiday in Tuusula, you can explore the former homes of many major Finnish artists. There are also several interesting museums in the area, including the Lotta Museum. You can easily cycle the quiet coastal road between the attractions.
Despite Tuusula being a small and quiet town, there are several sites worth visiting near the town centre. Start from Tuusula Church and the grave of Finland's national writer, Aleksis Kivi. Nearby, you will find the Tuusula Workers' Home Museum, which focuses on the lives of local craftsmen and women in the early 20th century.
Enjoy an interesting and low-cost holiday in Tuusula by visiting the artists' homes and museums around Lake Tuusula, and exploring the 6-mile century-old country road, which runs along the eastern shore of Lake Tuusula between Tuusula and Järvenpää. Famed writer, Juhani Aho, moved to this area with his artist wife Venny Soldan-Brofeldt in 1897. They were subsequently followed by other artists seeking inspiration from the tranquil environment.
The former home of poet J. H. Erkko, named Erkkola after its owner, now hosts a multitude of cultural events. Just a stone's throw away from Erkkola is the Aleksis Kivi Memorial Cottage, where the writer died in 1872. This small unpainted log cabin is a reminder of the humble lives of the inhabitants during the 19th century. The nearby Lotta Museum focuses on the experiences and contribution of female volunteers to the history of Finland.
Continue your journey with the Halosenniemi Museum, in the former studio of the painter Pekka Halonen. You should then visit Ahola which contains material relating to Juhani Aho and work by Venny Soldan-Brofeldt. Finally, no visit is complete without visiting Ainola, the former home of Jean and Aino Sibelius.
Tuusula is easily reached from Helsinki by bus, or by car along road 45. Round off your tour by admiring the stunning scenery of Lake Tuusula from the rocks at Sarvikallio.
