You can even cross into Germany if you are so inclined. Many residents of Tinglev belong to the German minority in North Schleswig.
The charming whitewashed Tinglev Church, dating back to approximately 1100, with its unique tower rising above the town is definitely worth a visit. Inside is a winged altarpiece, one of only two of its kind in Denmark, with an original period painting depicting a protestant service. The church is open daily during daytime hours.
Opportunities to enjoy physical activity abound. A walk along part of the 45-mile coastal Gendarm path is but one example. You can easily get on or off the path, whether using public transport or driving your own car. The entire stretch goes from the Danish-German border in Padborg to Høruphav on the island of Als. Broken down into various stages, you can choose the sections you find most interesting. The full path takes well over a day to complete.
A holiday in Tinglev puts you in close proximity to some of Denmark's national monuments, such as the Dybbøl Mill at Dybbøl Banke, the site of the largest battle in the war of 1864 (consequently known as the "Battle of Dybbøl Mill"). In Tinglev you are also close to Frøslev Prison Camp, which during the Second World War was created to prevent deportation of Danish prisoners to German concentration camps.
Sønderborg is the closest airport. It takes about 30 minutes to reach Sønderborg from Tinglev by car, while Billund International Airport is about an hour and a half away by car. There are various possibilities if you are using public transport. There is, for example, a train connection linking Tinglev to Sønderborg and Vejle, where you can catch a bus to Billund Airport.
Tinglev is not a large commercial city, but you will be able to find everyday shops and a few places to eat.
