2. Barry Island Beach

Sun worshippers have been flocking here since Victorian times to what is essentially a small island, though joined now to the mainland since 1896 by a small pier. The site of a Butlins holiday camp during the 1960’s, Barry Beach is perfect for families, with its signature calling card being Barry Island Pleasure Park. Come here for crowds, candy floss and sticks of rock, the scream of the rollercoaster and the thump of the dodgems.

3. Grand Theatre

Even if you’re not particularly interested in the performing arts, the rich history of the Grand Theatre and its flamboyant architectural style mark it out as well worth a visit. The theatre was opened on 26 July 1897 by the then extremely famous opera diva, Madame Adelina Patti. During its early years it played host to touring companies from around the world and some of the most famous names of the day. Stars to tread its boards during this period included Ivor Novello, Forbes Robertson, Jesse Matthews and Sir Henry Irving.

4. Mumbles Pier

Constructed during the late 19th Century, it was designed by W. Sutcliffe Marsh for the Mumbles Railway and Pier Company as the terminus of the line from Swansea. Visitors these days will find a range of traditional seaside attractions like bowling alleys, air hockey tables and arcade machines in the same spot where once a bandstand serenaded the passengers boarding and disembarking the steamers of the P & A Campbell White Funnel Fleet. The Victorian-style beach cafe offers a cream tea to die for, while the Pirate Captain ride offers the chance to see who's the greatest sea-dog of Mumbles Pier.

5. Rhondda Valley

Rhondda Valley is an area of outstanding natural beauty with a rich mining heritage. For more than 100 years this was an industrial heartland where tens of thousands of men extracted coal from the earth. The mines may have closed, but their history can be explored. Go underground on a mine tour and get active in the outdoors on a hiking or cycling expedition.

6. Caswell Bay Beach
