1. Nugget Point Lighthouse
Take a short drive from the centre of Kaka Point to reach the Nugget Point Lighthouse, one of the star attractions of the Catlins. Climb to the base of the lighthouse for sweeping views of the coast. Peer down at the five rocks below, known by locals as the Nuggets. At dusk the lighthouse is among the most popular spots in the region to watch the sunset and is a great place for a picnic dinner.

3. McLean Falls
With a combined height of about 22 metres (72 feet), the two-part McLean Falls are a great photo opportunity for anyone wanting to see the varied landscape of the Catlins region. Access the falls by a manageable 40-minute return hike. McLean Falls feature an upper and lower section and a series of terraces in the Tautuku River. Enjoy relief from the summer sun as you walk beneath towering ferns. Weave your way under low-lying, moss-covered branches as you discover the stunning local flora of the Catlins Conservation Park.

4. Purakaunui Falls
Rising to national fame in the mid 1970s following its use on the New Zealand postage stamp, Purakaunui Falls have remained among the most photographed waterfalls in the country ever since. Today, the waterfalls attract thousands of visitors annually. Come to see its three tiered cascades, photograph its 20-metre (66-foot) drop and make use of the relatively short walk to reach the falls. With a viewing platform that is accessible by wheelchair, Purakaunui Falls offer a fantastic waterfall experience for visitors of all ages and hiking ability.

5. Cannibal Bay Beach
Much of the appeal of Cannibal Bay Beach comes with the scenic and adventurous route taken to arrive at its shores. Drive past rolling fields inhabited by sheep to reach a flax-lined beach with perfect waves peeling at either end of the bay. Cannibal Bay is most visited for its colony of sea lions but it is also a great place to watch the sun set, have a swim or walk across the sand dunes to reach the historic Surat Bay.
