Suomussalmi has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and its best-known sights include the rock paintings at Värikallio. History is a part of the region, especially because some of the biggest battles of the Winter War were fought here. Next to Lake Kiantajärvi, you’ll find the Jalonniemi House, which has boutiques and services as well as a tourist office.
If you’re interested in local history, visit the Suomussalmi House Museum, which exhibits buildings from around the region. Visit a unique room from the early nineteenth century where smoke was let out through the ceiling vent, or the former inn that now serves as the main museum building. You can also see the trenches and armour blockades left over from the Winter War at the Purasjoki Trench. The Winter War Monument is a sight to behold, with its field of 17,000 stones and its central monument, Wide Embrace.
Ilmari Kianto is a well-known author from the region, and his home at Turjanlinna is a popular destination. The original Turjanlinna burnt down twice, but the surviving buildings are now a museum. Try a summer cruise on Lake Kiantajärvi, or travel directly to Turjanlinna from central Suomussalmi. The Suomussalmi library also has a permanent Ilmari Kianto exhibition which is open all-year round.
The art in Suomussalmi is not confined indoors, but has spread outside as statues and rock paintings. You can organise an inexpensive holiday in Suomussalmi by utilising Camping Hossan Lumo and its hiking trail, with 61 colourful rock paintings.
Suomussalmi is most easily reached by car along highway 5, which stretches from Heinola to Sodankylä. Enjoy the natural peace of Suomussalmi, or create music on the giant instruments of Soiva Metsä.
