Stranda

Travel Guide

A river winding through a mountainous landscape with dense green forests and steep cliffs.
A lake surrounded by mountains with a clear sky.
A fjord with a boat, surrounded by steep cliffs and lush greenery.
A mountainous landscape with a lake, forested areas, and a small settlement.
A multi-tiered waterfall cascading into a turquoise lake surrounded by lush green forest and rocky cliffs.

Idyllically located among the fjords and the mountains, Stranda may be best known as the home of the village of Geiranger.

Those travelling to Stranda will find that the Sunnmøre village is sparsely populated. This may be due to the huge, precipitous and frankly imposing mountain walls found everywhere around the municipal capital.

Storfjorden is one of the busiest cruise ship ports in Norway. During the summer there is a steady stream of Norwegian and foreign vessels arriving to enjoy the magnificent scenery that can be experienced when visiting Stranda. The main port of call for the cruise ships is Geiranger, a small village with only 250 permanent residents but frequented by more than 300,000 tourists each year.

But Stranda has much more to offer. At the centre of the village there is both industry and culture, almost enough for a holiday in Stranda to feel like a city break. Perhaps the most iconic product made in the village is the Pizza Grandiosa, while Ekornes Møbelfabrikk is a big name outside of the country's borders. Yet it is the magnificent and unique natural experiences that really attract the tourists.

Whether cruising the fjords, enjoying a winter break in the mountains or a weekend trip to Stranda, there will be plenty of things to see, experience and visit. From Geiranger, many tourists take the 10-minute drive up to the Flydalsjuvet viewpoint, with its sensational views of the village and the fjord. If you drive a bit further, you will find the Nibbevegen road, which runs from Djupvasshytta to Dalsnibba – 5,000 feet above sea level.

If you require more excitement on your holidays, Stranda Ski Resort can provide challenges and skiing activities for both beginners and experienced skiers. You will find slopes on both sides of the valley and, during the summer, several of the lifts will lead you to guided walks, bike tours and other mountain adventures.

The residents of Stranda know how to appreciate their surroundings while also being generous with natural and cultural experiences. You will be well received, whether staying at one of the small accommodation providers or one of the large hotels in Stranda.
