With a name that’s recognised all over the world, the Spanish Steps is another unforgettable landmark within the Italian capital, that every visitor should see.

Probably the most famous staircase in the world, Rome’s Spanish Steps have a romance all of their own. The Spanish Steps are relatively young compared to other ancient attractions in Rome, but they still have an interesting history. Built in 1717, and designed by architects Francesco de Sanctis and Alessandro Specchi, this staircase of 138 steps was intended to offer better access to the Trinita dei Monti church. The design of this classic monument incorporates curves, straight lines, vistas and terraces into a design that is generally considered to blend seamlessly and elegantly into the surrounding architecture of the piazza.Over the centuries, the stairway has been instrumentally involved in the history of Rome. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, the Spanish Steps were synonymous with the local art scene in Rome, as a place where local artists, writers, dandies and bohemians diverged. While in the 20th century, cinema immortalised the monument for all eternity, with the Spanish Steps making frequent appearances on the big screen in films such as “Bicycle Thieves” (1948), “Roman Holiday” (1953) and “The Talented Mr. Ripley” (1999).If you feel inclined to climb the staircase, you can get a closer look at the exquisite 16th century church at their apex. At the base of the staircase you’ll find the 17th century construction Piazza di Spagna, which incorporates the Bernini masterpiece, Barcaccia Fountain, as its focal point. You should bear in mind that some things aren’t permitted on the Spanish Steps such as eating. Nevertheless, the monument remains a popular and thriving meeting point for both locals and visitors, making this a historical site with a unique atmosphere. It really is the ideal spot to bask in the beauty of Rome, not to mention the beauty of its weather. The Spanish Steps are in central Rome. The best way to reach them is via the Metro. Take Metro Line A (the red line) to the Spagna station, which is right next to the steps. Many buses stop at Piazza del Popolo, a 10-minute walk away.

They were just steps, I don't see what the big deal is.

Lots of steps! Police don't allow anyone to sit on the steps other than to take a quick photo. Beware the men giving out roses at the top of the steps, they are very persistent and not easy to shake off.

Very busy, but worth a visit - especially if you also call in to Babington’s for the best cup of tea and pastries in Rome!
