This is an impeccably clean and lovely 1905 hotel. I've never stayed at such an old property that was in such fine shape -- for example, the elevator: usually in old places, these are not working or are shabby. You will not find common features such as snack/soda machine, but a nice continental breakfast is served on each floor -- so convenient. The rooms have no AC, but because old places were built with cross ventilation in mind, simply open the windows and the room becomes as cool as desired. The staff was cordially tiff to warmly friendly. The Italian restaurant downstairs smelled good, but we did not partake. Two blocks east is the Tenderloin, so if you are upset by the sufferings of the poor and destitute, do not walk that way; two blocks west is beautiful Union Square with its glittering shops, theatres, and the famed Powell trolley car. Five blocks' walk will have you at the BART station. Restaurants abound in the area; the corner store sells local treats such as Its-It ice creams in all flavors.
