Sally Port

Sally Port
Ghosts of historic seafaring vessels and military sieges hover near this former harbor, remembered fondly by locals and honored by a plaque at the entry.

For its impressive naval history, Sally Port holds a special place in the hearts of the people of Portsmouth. Today, the former harbor is gone and a memorial plaque and portal in the Old Portsmouth ramparts stand in its stead. Meet friends and family in this popular gathering spot and enjoy the stunning views of the sea.

Arrive at the rectangular gap in the city’s ramparts, where the port once stood. Gaze through this opening and enjoy the views of the sea beyond it. Walk through the wall’s gate and imagine going off on a maritime voyage or battle centuries ago.

As you look at the city walls and the gate, to your left is a large sculpture resembling the link of an anchor’s chain. Check out the fascinating Square Tower beyond it, dating back to the 1400s. Today it hosts live music concerts and weddings, among other events.

Consider the long and interesting past entwined with this key highlight in the historic quarter of Portsmouth. It was the point of embarkation for key events from British military and royal history. Read the inscription about the port’s past on the bronze plaque adorning the interior wall of the portal. It tells how Catherine of Braganza arrived here in 1662, before marrying King Charles II.

Walk beside this historic wall and browse the modern and quirky shops built into it. At the end of the wall is the imposing Round Tower, with its gallery and café. Stay and watch the sunset by the Portsmouth Harbour.

Sally Port is part of the city walls on the northwestern side of the Square Tower in Old Portsmouth. Take a bus to the Grand Parade stop. You can park here for free in the evening.

Explore the area for other highlights such as the Royal Garrison Church, the King’s Bastion and the Portsmouth Cathedral.
