Discover over 100 ski slopes, explore scenic cross-country trails and enjoy traditional Swedish mountain life at this enormous ski resort region.

Splendid Sälen is one of Sweden’s largest skiing destinations. This region features more than 100 trails over four sections, providing incredible skiing opportunities for both beginners and experts. Enjoy Sälen’s alpine lifestyle, which includes spas, warm coffee, scenic hikes and all-night discos.

Sälen’s four major ski areas, Lindvallen, Högfjället, Tandådalen and Hundfjället, provide access to some of the best slopes in the Dalarna region. Bring the kids to family-friendly Lindvallen, which has gentle ski slopes and conveyor carpet lifts for beginners. Alternate days on the mountain with other activities. See cattle grazing at Lindvallen Pasture or take the kids to Experium, an après-ski entertainment complex complete with a waterpark, spas, a shopping centre and a 3-D cinema.

Experience upscale alpine life at Högfjället, Sälen’s sanctuary of first-class hotels and top-notch dining. After dinner, follow the music to multi-levelled nightclubs such as Högfjällscenter or Vinterträdgården and dance until the early hours.

Watch expert freestyle skiers and snowboarders making flips look easy at the Tandådalen terrain parks or try your own tricks at the resort’s huge halfpipe. Next door, Hundfjället features trails suited for all skill levels. Explore Trollskogen, where over 700 carved trolls peek out from behind trees during the day in the sun and at night illuminated by LED lighting. Try the challenging 45-degree slope known locally as “the wall.”

Explore the snowcapped vistas on a guided snowshoe or husky sled tour. Cross-country ski trails also provide hours of serene gliding. In summer, jog or mountain bike along these same trails.

Visit Sälen in April to see the Winter Games, where elite mogul, ski cross and slalom skiers race for supremacy. In March, watch thousands of competitors race in the marathon Vasaloppet, the world’s oldest and longest cross-country ski race, 56 miles (90 kilometres) from Sälen to Mora.

Get to Sälen by bus from Mora, which is accessible from Stockholm via air or train. The Sälen Ski & Swim bus provides free transportation between the region’s resorts for ski pass holders. Add swimming to your ski pass to use the poolariums with pool, hot tub and sauna.
