Hotel Schweizerhof Basel

10/10 Excellent

"If staying in Basel, I highly recommend the Hotel Schweizerhof. It is conveniently located one block from the Central Train Station, making our day trip to Lucerne very easy. And it is across the street from the local trams, which makes getting to the old town, or anywhere in the city, very easy. I love that staying in any hotel in Basel gives you a free public transportation ticket for the duration of your stay. It even included our bus trip to the airport. The breakfast buffet was very good each morning plus there is a grocery store and several restaurants in the Central Station for lunch and dinner, and they are open on Sundays when most other places in Basel are closed. Staff spoke excellent English and were extremely helpful as we navigated the city. Great stay!"

"Stayed here many time and it’s a very good quality stay that the Pullman in Basel offers. Try and get a room away from the Main Street as it does get noisy with the trams. Breakfast is a bit on the expensive side but it’s Switzerland so expected. Avoid the salmon at breakfast. Everywhere is clean and the staff have Swiss efficiency."

"We love our room and the breakfast was excellent with lots of choices. Front desk staff were very friendly. The only suggestion I have is to provide detailed instructions on arrival - e.g. hotel reception is on the 6 floor，there’s separate elevator for parking and the hotel. For international travellers make sure all communications are in English ☺️"

"Checkin was a disaster compounded by unnecessary surliness and incompetence. They demand a 24 hour pre check in online and I did that noting that I would stop by at 1 pm to drop bags and avail myself of their luggage storage option. I received an email back thanking me for pre-check in. I showed up at 3 pm and there was a family from Montreal also looking to check in early. The phone didn’t pick up then a random guy came and accosted us for being early and I explained I spelled it out in the pre check in. He said to give him 5 minutes. That turned into fifteen minutes and then some other guy showed up and accosted us again and shut the door and left us out on the street in the hot weather. I found his language to be rude and abrasive as did the Montreal family. Finally some hotel guests took pity on us and let us in and showed us where the luggage storage was and we went to get some water nearby (why that was so difficult for the hotel staff Ill never know). I don’t know why they bother with the pre-registration kabuki. Then my room didn’t have a frying pan but there was a whisk and a spatula. After three days I gave up asking. It’s unfortunate because it’s a nicely renovated old building in a convenient spot though it was interesting that they have a placard at the front desk advising guests not to argue with staff so somehow the surliness is built into the hospitality illusion they offer. It was like a surly Fawlty Towers Totally uncalled for. C’est dommage."
